Formula and methodology
Formula: range = max-min; midpoint = (max+min)/2; endpoint ratio = max/min when min ≠ 0.
This compact endpoint tool makes the direction of the range explicit and reports the midpoint. The endpoint ratio is shown only when division by the minimum is defined.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Minimum value — minimum -1000000000; maximum 1000000000
- Maximum value — minimum -1000000000; maximum 1000000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Minimum value | 8 |
| Maximum value | 20 |
Range: 12; midpoint: 14; maximum/minimum ratio: 2.5.
Assumptions and limits
- The minimum is no greater than the maximum; negative values are allowed.
- Only the two endpoints are supplied, so no inference about the observations between them is made.
- The endpoint ratio is omitted when the minimum is zero because it is undefined.
