Formula and methodology
Formula: Sort values; median = third ordered value; mean = Σx/5; range = max-min.
The median is the central ordered observation, so one unusually large or small value cannot pull it as directly as it pulls the mean. The page shows both centers and the endpoint range.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Value 1 — minimum -1000000000; maximum 1000000000
- Value 2 — minimum -1000000000; maximum 1000000000
- Value 3 — minimum -1000000000; maximum 1000000000
- Value 4 — minimum -1000000000; maximum 1000000000
- Value 5 — minimum -1000000000; maximum 1000000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Value 1 | 12 |
| Value 2 | 4 |
| Value 3 | 25 |
| Value 4 | 9 |
| Value 5 | 7 |
Median: 9; mean: 11.4; range: 21.
Assumptions and limits
- Exactly five observations are supplied and equal weighting is intended.
- The median is the third ordered value; ties are valid and remain in the ordering.
- The range is only an endpoint measure and should not be confused with a variance-based spread.
