Formula and methodology
Formula: bytes = width x height x depth/8 x frames / compression; MiB = bytes/2^20; MB = bytes/10^6.
Each pixel stores depth bits, so dividing by 8 gives bytes per pixel. Multiply by pixel count and frames, then divide by the compression ratio. MiB and MB differ only in the divisor.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Width — px; minimum 1; maximum 1000000000
- Height — px; minimum 1; maximum 1000000000
- Colour depth — bits; Bits per pixel; typical values 1, 8, 16, 24, 32.; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000
- Frames — 1 for a still image; more for animation or video.; minimum 1; maximum 1000000000
- Compression ratio — 1 means uncompressed; 2 halves the file.; minimum 1; maximum 1000000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Width | 1920 |
| Height | 1080 |
| Colour depth | 24 |
| Frames | 1 |
| Compression ratio | 1 |
6220800 bytes; 5.9326 MiB; 6.2208 MB.
Assumptions and limits
- Raw bitmap with no container overhead; headers ignored.
- Compression ratio applies uniformly across all frames.
