Formula and methodology
Formula: Mass percent = (mass of solute ÷ mass of solution) × 100; mass fraction = mass percent ÷ 100; ppm = mass fraction × 10⁶.
Mass percent is a mass-based concentration: it compares the component mass with the total solution mass. It is distinct from volume percent, molarity, and elemental percent composition, so the denominator must be the complete solution or sample mass.
