Formula and methodology
Formula: Potato mass = guests×potato mass per guest×(1+extra/100); butter = potato kg×butter grams per kg; milk = potato kg×milk millilitres per kg.
The page scales a recipe from visible ratios rather than claiming one universal mashed-potato recipe. Potato mass is calculated first, then the butter and milk amounts follow the entered per-kilogram values.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Guests — people; minimum 1; maximum 1000000
- Raw potatoes per guest — g/person; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 100000
- Butter per kilogram potatoes — g/kg; minimum 0; maximum 100000
- Milk per kilogram potatoes — mL/kg; minimum 0; maximum 100000
- Extra allowance — %; minimum 0; maximum 1000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Guests | 10 |
| Raw potatoes per guest | 250 |
| Butter per kilogram potatoes | 80 |
| Milk per kilogram potatoes | 150 |
| Extra allowance | 10 |
Plan 2.75 kg potatoes, 220 g butter, and 412.5 mL milk.
Assumptions and limits
- The raw potato amount is a planning mass per guest and the allowance is applied before the recipe ratios.
- Butter and milk ratios refer to the raw potato mass; cooking loss, peeling, absorption, texture, and substitutions are not modeled.
- Ingredient quantities do not provide nutrition, allergy, medical, or dietary advice.
- A cook should adjust texture and taste with the actual potato variety and preparation method.
