Formula and methodology
Formula: Marginal cost over the interval = (total cost after − total cost before) ÷ (output after − output before).
This calculator measures the average incremental cost across the entered output interval. It is a finite-change estimate of the marginal-cost concept, not the derivative of an unknown continuous cost curve. The change in cost and change in output remain visible so a visitor can catch reversed periods or inconsistent units.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Total cost before — currency units; minimum -1000000000000; maximum 1000000000000
- Total cost after — currency units; minimum -1000000000000; maximum 1000000000000
- Output before — units; minimum 0; maximum 1000000000000
- Output after — units; minimum 0; maximum 1000000000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Total cost before | 12000 |
| Total cost after | 15000 |
| Output before | 400 |
| Output after | 500 |
Cost increases by 3,000 over 100 additional units, so interval marginal cost is 30 currency units per unit.
Assumptions and limits
- The two observations describe the same product, cost boundary, currency, and reporting period basis.
- Output after must differ from output before so the interval cost per unit is defined.
- The result is an average incremental cost between two observations, not a full cost curve or exact infinitesimal derivative.
- Total cost may include the fixed and variable costs the visitor intends to compare, but the calculator does not classify them.
- Capacity, quality, downtime, step costs, learning effects, and economies of scale are not inferred.
- The result does not recommend a production level, price, or business decision.
