Formula and methodology
Formula: L = 4πd²F, where L is luminosity, d is distance, and F is received energy flux.
Flux describes power crossing each square metre at the observer. If the source radiates isotropically, that flux is spread across a sphere with area 4πd², so multiplying by the sphere area estimates the source luminosity. The calculator reports watts and solar-luminosity units using 3.828 × 10²⁶ W as the comparison constant.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Observed energy flux — W/m²; minimum 1.0E-12; maximum 1.0E+30
- Distance to source — m; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1.0E+30
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Observed energy flux | 1361 |
| Distance to source | 149600000000 |
About 3.83 × 10²⁶ W, or approximately 1 solar luminosity.
Assumptions and limits
- The entered flux is a bolometric or otherwise consistently defined flux and the distance is in metres.
- The source is treated as radiating uniformly in all directions; beaming, absorption, extinction, and anisotropy are not corrected.
- The solar-luminosity comparison is a unit reference, not a claim that the source has solar-like spectrum or temperature.
