Formula and methodology
Formula: Loss ratio = incurred losses ÷ earned premium×100; loss-cost ratio = incurred losses ÷ earned premium; premium remaining after losses = earned premium − incurred losses.
A loss ratio is a focused insurance measure: it compares incurred losses with earned premium for the same defined period and scope. WorldCalculate shows the percentage and its decimal equivalent, plus a transparent arithmetic difference. The result is not a combined ratio and does not claim that the remaining premium is profit, because expense, reinsurance, reserve development, investment income, and other underwriting items are outside this calculator.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Incurred losses — currency units; minimum 0; maximum 1000000000000000
- Earned premium — currency units; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Incurred losses | 250000 |
| Earned premium | 1000000 |
The loss ratio is 25%, meaning 0.25 currency units of incurred losses per earned-premium unit; the simple premium-minus-loss difference is 750,000.
Assumptions and limits
- Incurred losses and earned premium refer to the same book, coverage scope, and reporting period.
- Earned premium is positive because it is the denominator of the ratio.
- Incurred losses are entered as a nonnegative amount for this worksheet.
- The ratio is reported before adding operating or claim-handling expenses.
- The calculator does not choose whether incurred losses include particular reserve or reinsurance adjustments.
- A regulator, insurer, or analyst should use the definitions and accounting policy applicable to the intended report.
