Formula and methodology
Formula: cylindrical volume=π(d/2)²×length; dry-mass estimate=volume×density; adjusted mass=dry mass×moisture factor.
A log is approximated as a cylinder and the density is supplied by the user. Taper, bark, knots, ovality, species, moisture content, and voids between stacked logs can materially change actual mass.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Log diameter (cm) — minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 10000
- Log length (m) — minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000
- Wood density (kg/m³) — minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 2000
- Moisture/mass factor — minimum 0.1; maximum 3
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Log diameter (cm) | 30 |
| Log length (m) | 3 |
| Wood density (kg/m³) | 550 |
| Moisture/mass factor | 1.15 |
Volume≈0.2121 m³; adjusted mass≈134.35 kg.
Assumptions and limits
- Diameter is converted from centimetres to metres.
- Density is a representative dry or reference density in kg/m³.
- The moisture factor is a planning multiplier, not a moisture measurement.
