Formula and methodology
Formula: Log reduction = log₁₀(initial count) − log₁₀(final count) = log₁₀(initial ÷ final); percent reduction = (1 − final ÷ initial) × 100.
Log reduction expresses a multiplicative change on a base-10 scale. A three-log reduction means the surviving count is one-thousandth of the initial count under the entered counts; the page also shows the remaining fraction and percent so the scale is not mistaken for a percentage itself.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Initial count — count; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000000
- Final count — count; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Initial count | 1000000 |
| Final count | 1000 |
A change from 1,000,000 to 1,000 organisms is a 3-log reduction, 99.9% reduction, and 0.1% remaining.
Assumptions and limits
- Both counts use the same sampling unit and represent comparable measurements before and after a defined process.
- Counts are positive because a measured zero cannot be inserted into a logarithm; a non-detect should be reported with its detection-limit treatment outside this arithmetic.
- The calculation describes the entered reduction and does not validate sampling recovery, assay uncertainty, exposure conditions, or regulatory compliance.
