Formula and methodology
Formula: log₂(x) = ln(x) / ln(2).
The base-2 logarithm asks which exponent on 2 produces the input. Change-of-base expresses it with natural logarithms, so the tool can report log₂, ln, and log₁₀ without confusing a logarithm base with a unit.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Positive value — minimum 1.0E-12; maximum 1000000000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Positive value | 8 |
log₂(8) = 3
Assumptions and limits
- The input is strictly positive because real logarithms are undefined at zero and for negative values.
- Results are real-valued and rounded for display.
- The calculation does not round to an integer unless the input is an exact power of two.
