Formula and methodology
Formula: Base perimeter P=b₁+b₂+l₁+l₂; lateral area=P×L. Total area=lateral area+2×base area, when base area is supplied separately.
Every lateral face of a right prism is a rectangle whose one edge is a side of the trapezoidal base. Adding those rectangles gives perimeter times prism length.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Trapezoid base 1 — length units; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000
- Trapezoid base 2 — length units; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000
- Trapezoid leg 1 — length units; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000
- Trapezoid leg 2 — length units; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000
- Prism length — length units; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Trapezoid base 1 | 8 |
| Trapezoid base 2 | 4 |
| Trapezoid leg 1 | 3 |
| Trapezoid leg 2 | 5 |
| Prism length | 10 |
Base perimeter =20; lateral area =200 square units.
Assumptions and limits
- The prism is right, so the lateral faces use the entered prism length without an oblique correction.
- The four base-side lengths form a valid trapezoid perimeter.
- Only lateral area and the perimeter are calculated; base area is intentionally not inferred from side lengths alone.
