Formula and methodology
Formula: Use the WGS84 ellipsoid and k₀=0.9996 with the standard Transverse Mercator series; zone=floor((longitude+180)/6)+1, with Norway and Svalbard zone exceptions, 500,000 m false easting, and 10,000,000 m false northing south of the equator.
UTM describes a geographic position in a six-degree zone using metres rather than degrees. This page applies the WGS84 ellipsoid, chooses the standard UTM zone including the recognized Norway and Svalbard exceptions, and returns the latitude band, hemisphere, easting, and northing. The output is a coordinate conversion, not a survey datum transformation or a promise of centimetre-level accuracy.

- UTM is defined here for latitudes from 80°S through 84°N; polar UPS coordinates are outside this page.
- The standard UTM scale factor, central meridian, false easting, and southern-hemisphere false northing are used.
- The result uses the standard zone rules and does not apply a local survey grid, datum shift, geoid height, elevation correction, or time-dependent tectonic adjustment.
