Formula and methodology
Formula: area = π(d/2)²; irradiance = optical power/area; dB relative to 1 W/m² = 10log₁₀(irradiance/1 W/m²).
In engineering contexts, a useful first meaning of laser brightness is irradiance: optical power divided by illuminated area. A smaller circular spot raises the irradiance even when the optical power is unchanged. The calculator reports the spot area, W/m², W/cm², and a logarithmic level referenced to 1 W/m²; it does not estimate visual brightness, radiance, eye hazard, or beam quality.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Optical power — W; minimum 1.0E-12; maximum 1.0E+15
- Circular beam diameter — mm; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Optical power | 1 |
| Circular beam diameter | 1 |
Area ≈ 7.854×10⁻⁷ m² and irradiance ≈ 1.273×10⁶ W/m².
Assumptions and limits
- The beam footprint is approximated as a filled circle with the entered diameter and uniform average power density.
- Optical power is the power arriving at the stated spot; losses, Gaussian beam shape, divergence, and wavelength are not modeled.
- The dB value is a mathematical reference level and is not a laser-safety classification or a perceptual brightness scale.
