Formula and methodology
Formula: volume=area×depth in metres×(1+waste); mass=volume×density; tonnes=mass/1000.
The calculator converts a planned layer into a material quantity. Rock size, compaction, settling, access, edging, and supplier moisture can change the delivered quantity.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Area (m²) — minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 100000000
- Average depth (cm) — minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000
- Rock density (kg/m³) — minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 10000
- Waste/settling allowance (%) — minimum 0; maximum 100
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Area (m²) | 30 |
| Average depth (cm) | 5 |
| Rock density (kg/m³) | 1600 |
| Waste/settling allowance (%) | 10 |
Volume=1.65 m³; mass=2,640 kg=2.64 tonnes.
Assumptions and limits
- Area is in square metres, depth in centimetres, and density in kilograms per cubic metre.
- The layer has a uniform average depth.
- The density is a user-selected bulk estimate for the rock product.
