Formula and methodology
Formula: Single phase S = VI; balanced three phase S = √3VₗIₗ; P = S·pf; Q = S·√(1−pf²).
Apparent power is the RMS volt-ampere product before power factor resolves it into real and reactive parts. This calculator distinguishes single-phase from balanced three-phase line quantities, reports kVA, kW, and kVAR, and makes the power-factor assumption visible instead of calling apparent power watts.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Circuit type — 2 choices
- RMS line voltage — V; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000
- RMS line current — A; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000
- Power factor — relative; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Circuit type | single |
| RMS line voltage | 230 |
| RMS line current | 10 |
| Power factor | 0.8 |
A 230 V, 10 A single-phase load is 2.30 kVA, 1.84 kW, and 1.38 kVAR at power factor 0.8.
Assumptions and limits
- Voltage and current are RMS line quantities; the three-phase mode assumes a balanced system and line-to-line voltage.
- The entered power factor is a nonnegative magnitude between zero and one, so the reactive-power result is a magnitude without leading or lagging sign.
- Waveform distortion, phase imbalance, harmonics, wiring losses, and equipment ratings are not modeled; this is an arithmetic estimate, not a design approval.
