Formula and methodology
Formula: Kinematic viscosity ν = dynamic viscosity μ ÷ density ρ.
Kinematic viscosity describes how momentum diffuses through a fluid relative to its density. For air, values change with temperature, pressure, and composition, so the calculator deliberately asks for the dynamic viscosity and density of the state being analyzed instead of silently assuming a universal temperature.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Dynamic viscosity — Pa·s; minimum 1.0E-12; maximum 1000000
- Air density — kg/m³; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Dynamic viscosity | 1.73E-5 |
| Air density | 1.229 |
The kinematic viscosity is about 1.408×10⁻⁵ m²/s, or 14.08 cSt.
Assumptions and limits
- Dynamic viscosity and density describe the same air state and use SI units.
- Air is treated as a Newtonian fluid for this property calculation.
- The result is a property conversion, not a full temperature- or altitude-dependent air-property model.
