Formula and methodology
Formula: bytes = kB×1000; MB = kB/1000; GB = kB/1,000,000; MiB = bytes/1,048,576.
Storage manufacturers commonly use decimal prefixes, while operating systems may display binary mebibytes. Showing both prevents a hidden 1000-versus-1024 assumption.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Kilobytes (decimal) — kB; minimum 0; maximum 1000000000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Kilobytes (decimal) | 5000 |
5,000 kB = 5,000,000 bytes = 5 MB = 0.005 GB = about 4.76837 MiB.
Assumptions and limits
- The input kilobyte uses the decimal SI convention: 1 kB = 1000 bytes.
- The binary comparison uses 1 MiB = 1,048,576 bytes; it is labelled MiB rather than MB.
- This is a size conversion and does not account for filesystem overhead or usable capacity.
