Formula and methodology
Formula: Wavelength = c/f; radiating section = velocity factor × wavelength/2; matching section = velocity factor × wavelength/4; ideal total = 3/4 of the velocity-adjusted wavelength.
A J-pole combines an end-fed half-wave radiator with a quarter-wave matching section. This calculator keeps the electrical lengths visible so a builder can use them as starting dimensions before trimming and impedance measurement.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Operating frequency — MHz; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Conductor velocity factor — minimum 0.1; maximum 1
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Operating frequency | 146 |
| Conductor velocity factor | 0.95 |
Wavelength ≈ 2.053 m; radiating section ≈ 0.975 m; matching section ≈ 0.488 m; ideal total ≈ 1.463 m.
Assumptions and limits
- The antenna is treated as an ideal straight-wire J-pole with the entered velocity factor.
- Frequency is in MHz and the speed of light is used for the free-space wavelength.
- Wire diameter, bends, feed gap, nearby objects, matching impedance, and final tuning are not modeled.
