Formula and methodology
Formula: IQR = Q3-Q1; midhinge = (Q1+Q3)/2; quartile coefficient = (Q3-Q1)/(Q3+Q1) when Q1+Q3 ≠ 0.
The IQR measures the width of the middle half of a dataset and ignores the extreme tails. The midhinge locates the center of the two quartiles.

- Q1 is no greater than Q3 and both are on the same measurement scale.
- Quartile values must come from a stated dataset and quartile convention; this page does not reconstruct the raw observations.
- The quartile coefficient is reported only when its denominator is nonzero and is not a replacement for IQR.
