Formula and methodology
Formula: Gross value = starting balance×(1+r)^years; simplified net value = starting balance×(1+r−fee)^years; fee drag = gross value − net value.
This scenario makes compounding fee drag visible without pretending to reproduce a fund ledger. One annual return and one annual fee are applied to a starting balance for the chosen horizon. The gross path ignores fees; the simplified net path reduces the annual growth rate by the fee. Real fees can be charged at different times, on different bases, and alongside contributions, withdrawals, taxes, or changing returns.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Starting balance — currency units; minimum 0.01; maximum 1000000000000
- Annual return before fee — % per year; minimum -99; maximum 100
- Annual fee — % per year; minimum 0; maximum 50
- Years — years; minimum 0; maximum 100
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Starting balance | 100000 |
| Annual return before fee | 4 |
| Annual fee | 0.5 |
| Years | 20 |
The simplified comparison grows 100,000 at 4% before fees and at 3.5% after the fee, making the ending-value gap visible without modeling a specific product.
Assumptions and limits
- The annual return and annual fee are constant throughout the selected horizon.
- The fee is modeled as a direct reduction of the annual growth rate, not as a specific fund billing method.
- There are no deposits, withdrawals, taxes, transaction charges, or changes in asset allocation.
- A negative return is allowed, but the combined net growth rate must remain above negative 100%.
- The fee-drag result is a scenario difference and not a statement of a product’s actual charges.
- Investment fees and expenses should be checked in the relevant prospectus, statement, or account disclosure.
