Formula and methodology
Formula: thickness=target R×conductivity; volume=area×thickness×(1+waste).
For a single homogeneous layer, thermal resistance is approximately thickness divided by conductivity. Real assemblies include films, bridges, moisture, compression, fasteners, ventilation, and climate-specific requirements.
