Formula and methodology
Formula: factor = (1 + annualRate / 100)^years; future equivalent = amount x factor; fixed future amount in today's purchasing power = amount / factor.
At positive inflation, replacing today's basket of goods costs more in the future, while an unchanged sum buys less. These are opposite calculations: multiply to find an equivalent future cost, and divide to express a fixed future sum in today's purchasing power.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Amount to compare — minimum 0; maximum 1000000000000
- Assumed annual inflation — %; A user-entered scenario, not a live CPI series. Negative percentages represent deflation.; minimum -50; maximum 100
- Time ahead — years; Fractional years use the same annual exponential factor; zero means no change.; minimum 0; maximum 100
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Amount to compare | 100000 |
| Assumed annual inflation | 3 |
| Time ahead | 10 |
Future equivalent cost: 134391.64; purchasing power of a fixed future 100000 in today's terms: 74409.39.
Assumptions and limits
- One annual inflation rate applies uniformly across the horizon and all goods; no country-specific price index or live rate is used.
- The amount is interpreted in two separate comparisons: today's cost for the first result, and an unchanged future sum for the second.
- Use one consistent currency. Fractional years are used exactly, and no investment interest or currency exchange is included.
