Formula and methodology
Formula: Lower reference weight = 18.5 x (height / 100)^2; upper reference weight = 25 x (height / 100)^2. The lower bound is included and the upper bound is excluded.
Solving BMI = weight / height squared for weight maps BMI 18.5 to below 25 onto a height-specific interval. The upper number is a boundary, not an included maximum. Rounded display values do not redefine the underlying cutoffs or establish an appropriate personal goal.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Age — years; Adult CDC BMI categories apply at age 20 and older.; minimum 20; maximum 100
- Height — cm; minimum 120; maximum 230
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Age | 32 |
| Height | 178 |
Reference weights: from 58.62 kg (inclusive) to below 79.21 kg (exclusive), with endpoints rounded for display.
Assumptions and limits
- The reference applies only to adults age 20 and older; the age field checks eligibility rather than modifying the equation.
- This is a BMI-derived screening interval, not a personalized ideal weight, diagnosis, or prescription; muscle, body composition, and clinical context are not assessed.
- Height is measured in centimeters. The interval is not intended for pregnancy or younger people, and its upper endpoint is exclusive.
