Formula and methodology
Formula: Planned scoops = ceil(guests × scoops per guest × (1 + allowance/100)); planned volume = planned scoops × scoop volume; tubs = ceil(planned volume / tub volume).
The planner treats a scoop as an entered volume and rounds only the number of scoops and containers. It does not pretend that every scoop is identical in a real serving line, or that a tub’s printed net quantity is the same as a measured volume in every product.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Guests — guests; minimum 1; maximum 100000
- Scoops per guest — scoops/guest; minimum 0; maximum 100
- Volume per scoop — mL; minimum 1; maximum 2000
- Extra allowance — %; minimum 0; maximum 500
- Tub size — L; minimum 0.001; maximum 1000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Guests | 20 |
| Scoops per guest | 2 |
| Volume per scoop | 60 |
| Extra allowance | 10 |
| Tub size | 1 |
Plan for 44 scoops, 2,640 mL of ice cream, and 3 one-litre tubs.
Assumptions and limits
- The scoop volume is a user-selected planning average and may change with scoop shape, temperature, and serving technique.
- The allowance covers seconds, uneven scoops, melting, or preference for extra portions; it is not a nutrition recommendation.
- Tub size is treated as a usable volume for arithmetic, while packaging may be labelled by mass and density can differ between products.
- The result does not model cones, toppings, dietary restrictions, allergens, freezer space, or food-safety holding time.
- Guests and scoops are planning counts; partial average scoops are converted to whole planned scoops before tubs are rounded.
- Check the product label and local food-safety practice before purchasing or serving.
