Formula and methodology
Formula: i = Δh/L; Q = KiA.
Darcy's law connects a porous medium's hydraulic conductivity with its gradient and cross-sectional area to estimate volumetric discharge. The sign convention is represented here as a positive magnitude from a supplied head drop.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Hydraulic conductivity — m/s; minimum 1.0E-12; maximum 1000000
- Flow cross-sectional area — m²; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000
- Hydraulic head difference — m; minimum 0; maximum 1000000000
- Flow length — m; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Hydraulic conductivity | 0.0001 |
| Flow cross-sectional area | 10 |
| Hydraulic head difference | 2 |
| Flow length | 100 |
The gradient is 0.02 and estimated discharge is 2.0×10⁻⁵ m³/s, or 1.728 m³/day.
Assumptions and limits
- Conductivity is uniform and the flow is represented by one-dimensional saturated Darcy flow.
- Head difference and flow length are positive or zero as bounded, and area is perpendicular to the modeled flow direction.
- Heterogeneity, unsaturated flow, wells, dispersion, storage, and transient groundwater behavior are not modeled.
