Formula and methodology
Formula: v = H0d, with distance in megaparsecs and H0 in km/s/Mpc.
Hubble's law is a first-order relation between distance and recession velocity for sufficiently distant galaxies in an expanding-universe interpretation. The entered Hubble constant remains visible because its chosen value is a scientific input, not a universal fixed display setting.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Galaxy distance — Mpc; minimum 0; maximum 1000000
- Hubble constant — km/s/Mpc; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Galaxy distance | 10 |
| Hubble constant | 70 |
The estimated recession velocity is 700 km/s, about 0.23% of the speed of light.
Assumptions and limits
- Distance is in megaparsecs and the entered Hubble constant uses matching units.
- The calculation is the low-redshift linear approximation and returns a recession-speed estimate.
- Peculiar velocities, cosmological parameter fits, curvature, redshift-distance corrections, and local-group motion are not modeled.
