Formula and methodology
Formula: Estimated weight in pounds = heart-girth² × body length ÷ divisor; convert pounds to kilograms by multiplying by 0.45359237. Divisors are 330 for an adult horse, 301 for a yearling, and 280 for a weanling in the selected scenario.
This is a tape-measure estimate, not a scale reading. The heart girth is measured around the horse behind the withers and elbow; body length runs from the point of the shoulder to the point of the buttock. The life-stage choice makes the selected divisor visible and avoids presenting one constant as accurate for every breed or body type.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Heart-girth circumference — in; minimum 1; maximum 300
- Body length from shoulder to buttock — in; minimum 1; maximum 300
- Life-stage divisor — 3 choices
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Heart-girth circumference | 70 |
| Body length from shoulder to buttock | 78 |
| Life-stage divisor | adult |
The adult scenario estimates (70² × 78) ÷ 330 = about 1,157.6 lb, or about 525.3 kg.
Assumptions and limits
- Both measurements are entered in inches because the published equation is calibrated in inches and pounds.
- The adult, yearling, and weanling divisors are scenario constants and are not a substitute for a livestock scale.
- The horse is standing square and the tape is snug without compressing the body.
- Breed, conformation, body condition, pregnancy, miniature horses, ponies, and draft types can change the error of the estimate.
- The result must not be used to choose medication, feed, dewormer, or veterinary treatment doses.
- A qualified veterinarian, nutritionist, or equine professional should review decisions that depend on actual body weight.
