Formula and methodology
Formula: For rL=min(rA,rB), rH=max(rA,rB), a=(rL+rH)/2: ΔvL=√(μ/rL)[√(2rH/(rL+rH))−1], ΔvH=√(μ/rH)[1−√(2rL/(rL+rH))], t=π√(a³/μ).
The model uses the ideal two-impulse Hohmann transfer between circular orbits. It reports positive burn magnitudes and a half-ellipse coast time while making the low and high orbit convention explicit.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Central-body gravitational parameter μ — m³/s²; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1.0E+20
- First circular-orbit radius — m; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000000
- Second circular-orbit radius — m; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Central-body gravitational parameter μ | 398600441800000 |
| First circular-orbit radius | 7000000 |
| Second circular-orbit radius | 14000000 |
The ideal total burn is about 2,147 m/s and the transfer time is about 5,354 s.
Assumptions and limits
- The two circular orbits are coplanar and centered on the same spherical body.
- Burns are instantaneous, tangential, and the radii are measured from the central body's center.
- Atmospheric drag, inclination changes, finite burns, third-body effects, launch windows, and spacecraft mass are not modeled.
