Formula and methodology
Formula: Track-event points use A(B−performance)^C; field-event points use A(performance−B)^C, with high-jump and long-jump inputs converted to centimetres, then each event score is truncated to a whole point and summed.
A heptathlon score is a combined-events total rather than a single performance measure. This worksheet keeps every event visible, applies the classic women’s heptathlon constants, and reports the track and field subtotals so a visitor can see where the total comes from.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- 100 m hurdles time — seconds; minimum 0.01; maximum 120
- High-jump height — m; minimum 0.01; maximum 3
- Shot-put distance — m; minimum 0.01; maximum 40
- 200 m time — seconds; minimum 0.01; maximum 120
- Long-jump distance — m; minimum 0.01; maximum 12
- Javelin distance — m; minimum 0.01; maximum 100
- 800 m time — seconds; minimum 0.01; maximum 600
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| 100 m hurdles time | 13.85 |
| High-jump height | 1.82 |
| Shot-put distance | 17.07 |
| 200 m time | 23.8 |
| Long-jump distance | 6.48 |
| Javelin distance | 57.18 |
| 800 m time | 127.63 |
The reference performances produce 1,000 points in each event and a 7,000-point total under the classic constants.
Assumptions and limits
- The seven inputs follow the women’s heptathlon event order and use seconds or metres as labelled.
- The classic combined-events constants are used for an educational estimate rather than a live federation scoring service.
- High-jump and long-jump performances are converted from metres to centimetres for their scoring equations.
- Event scores are truncated to whole points after applying the exponential equation.
- A non-positive scoring base produces zero points instead of a negative event score.
- Official results can also depend on current tables, wind readings, event rules, start validity, and governing-body procedures.
