Formula and methodology
Formula: pH = pKa + log₁₀([A⁻]/[HA]).
The Henderson-Hasselbalch relationship estimates the pH of a buffer from the acid's pKa and the ratio of conjugate base to weak acid. Concentrations must use a matching basis because only their ratio enters the logarithm.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- pKa — minimum -20; maximum 20
- Conjugate-base concentration — same concentration unit; minimum 1.0E-9; maximum 1000000000
- Weak-acid concentration — same concentration unit; minimum 1.0E-9; maximum 1000000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| pKa | 4.76 |
| Conjugate-base concentration | 0.2 |
| Weak-acid concentration | 0.1 |
pH ≈ 5.0610
Assumptions and limits
- The acid and conjugate base form one buffer pair and their concentrations are positive and comparable.
- The solution is sufficiently dilute for the concentration-ratio approximation; activities are not corrected.
- This is an estimate near the buffer's useful range, not a complete equilibrium or safety calculation.
