Formula and methodology
Formula: Predicted maximum heart rate = 208 - 0.7 x age; comparison heart rate = predicted maximum x percentOfMax / 100.
The Tanaka equation summarizes the relationship between age and maximum heart rate in healthy adults. A population estimate can differ substantially from an individual's measured maximum. The percentage result is arithmetic only and is not proof that exercising at that rate is safe or appropriate.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Age — years; Restricted to healthy-adult estimation, ages 18-80.; minimum 18; maximum 80
- Percentage of predicted maximum — %; A mathematical comparison, not a recommended training intensity.; minimum 50; maximum 100
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Age | 40 |
| Percentage of predicted maximum | 70 |
Age-predicted maximum: 180.00 bpm; 70% of that estimate: 126.00 bpm.
Assumptions and limits
- This is a population estimate for healthy adults age 18-80, not a measured maximum, diagnosis, safe ceiling, or exercise prescription.
- Medication, cardiovascular conditions, fitness, and individual variation can make an age-only estimate unsuitable; professional guidance is needed for individualized exercise decisions.
- The selected percentage is applied directly to predicted maximum heart rate, not heart-rate reserve; no resting pulse or training-zone prescription is inferred.
