Formula and methodology
Formula: Approximate joint volume = area×depth×width×(1/tile length+1/tile width); order volume = base×(1+waste/100).
The grid approximation counts one family of joints in each direction and makes the waste allowance visible.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Tiled area — m²; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Joint width — mm; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000
- Joint depth — mm; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000
- Tile length — m; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000
- Tile width — m; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000
- Waste allowance — %; minimum 0; maximum 1000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Tiled area | 20 |
| Joint width | 3 |
| Joint depth | 8 |
| Tile length | 0.3 |
| Tile width | 0.3 |
| Waste allowance | 10 |
Order grout ≈ 3.52 L.
Assumptions and limits
- Area and tile dimensions are metres; joint width and depth are millimetres.
- Tiles form a regular rectangular grid and joints are filled uniformly.
- Openings, irregular layouts, substrate absorption, product density, mixing loss, and manufacturer coverage are not modeled.
