Formula and methodology
Formula: For coefficient×x + constant relation 0, boundary = −constant/coefficient; divide by the coefficient and reverse the relation when it is negative.
The interval answer is paired with sample rows from a visitor-selected window. This makes the number-line direction, boundary inclusion, and sign reversal observable without pretending that a finite set of samples is the whole real-number solution.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Coefficient of x — minimum -1000000000; maximum 1000000000
- Constant term — minimum -1000000000; maximum 1000000000
- Relation to zero — 4 choices
- Sample window minimum — minimum -1000000000; maximum 1000000000
- Sample window maximum — minimum -1000000000; maximum 1000000000
- Sample points — minimum 3; maximum 25
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Coefficient of x | -4 |
| Constant term | 12 |
| Relation to zero | greaterEqual |
| Sample window minimum | -5 |
| Sample window maximum | 8 |
| Sample points | 7 |
−4x + 12 ≥ 0 becomes x ≤ 3, so the interval is (−∞, 3].
Assumptions and limits
- The inequality is coefficient×x + constant compared with zero.
- The coefficient is nonzero, so there is one finite boundary point.
- The sample window has a strictly larger maximum than minimum.
- Sample points illustrate the interval; they do not replace the interval notation.
- Strict relations exclude the boundary and non-strict relations include it.
- All arithmetic uses real numbers and finite entered values.
