Formula and methodology
Formula: Quality points = sum(grade points_i * credits_i); GPA = quality points / total credits.
Multiply each course's numeric grade points by its credit value and divide the combined quality points by total credits. The table exposes each course's contribution. Numeric grade points avoid imposing a universal letter-grade mapping, since plus/minus scales and A+ policies differ by institution.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Course grade points (0-4) — Comma- or whitespace-separated numeric grade points, not letter grades. At most 1,000 courses.
- Matching course credits — One credit value per course, 0.01 to 100. Use all 1s for an unweighted average.
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Course grade points (0-4) | 4, 3, 3.5 |
| Matching course credits | 3, 3, 2 |
3.5
Assumptions and limits
- Grade points must be from 0 to 4; weighted high-school or 4.3 scales are not supported.
- Credits must be positive, from 0.01 to 100 per course. Lists must match and contain no more than 1,000 items or 32,000 characters.
- Use your institution's grade-point mapping and exclude pass/fail or non-GPA courses yourself. Retake replacement policies are not applied.
- Equal credits produce an unweighted GPA; unequal credits produce a credit-weighted GPA.
