Formula and methodology
Formula: Peak real load = continuous load + starting surge × overlap. Planning watts = peak real load × (1 + reserve ÷ 100). Planning apparent power (kVA) = planning watts ÷ (1,000 × power factor ÷ 100).
This worksheet separates continuous watts, additional starting demand, overlap, reserve, and power factor. It gives a transparent planning estimate rather than a generator approval, because motor starting current, voltage, phase, altitude, temperature, fuel, harmonics, and manufacturer limits can determine the real selection.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.

Peak real load is 3,500 W; with 20% reserve the planning load is 4,200 W, equivalent to 5.25 kVA at an 80% planning power factor.
Assumptions and limits
- Continuous load is the real running power expected after startup.
- Starting surge is additional demand above the continuous load for the modeled event.
- Surge overlap is the fraction of starting surge assumed to coincide with the continuous load.
- Reserve is a planning margin applied after the peak real-load estimate.
- Power factor is entered as a percentage and used to convert planned watts to apparent kVA.
- The model does not simulate multiple motors starting at different times or generator transient response.
- Efficiency, voltage drop, altitude derating, temperature derating, fuel limits, and phase balance are not inferred.
- The result does not choose a breaker, transfer switch, conductor, grounding method, or connection procedure.
- Actual appliance nameplates and generator manufacturer instructions take priority over this estimate.
- Electrical installation and backup-power work must follow local code and qualified review.
