Formula and methodology
Formula: Opening perimeter = 2(length + width); minimum flat bag width = perimeter/2; recommended flat width = minimum width + width allowance; minimum bag length = bin height + max(length,width)/2; recommended length = minimum length + length allowance; bin volume = length × width × height.
A flat bag width represents half of the opening circumference, so a rectangular bin uses length plus width before a fitting allowance is added. The length estimate adds half of the larger opening dimension as a simple bottom-turning allowance. Product gussets, seams, drawstrings, taper, and manufacturer dimension conventions can change the fit, so use this as a screening estimate and compare the result with the actual label.

Assumptions and limits
- The bin opening is approximated as a level rectangle and all entered dimensions use compatible units.
- The listed flat bag width is the width of a bag laid flat, not its full circumference or filled width.
- The half-largest-dimension length allowance is a simple bottom-turning model; it is not a construction specification for every bag style.
- Width and length allowances are entered by the user because a tight liner, loose liner, tie closure, and overhang need different fits.
- The volume is the rectangular bounding volume; a tapered bin, lid, rim, liner thickness, and waste compaction are not modeled.
