Formula and methodology
Formula: Fₑ = Fₗrₗ/rₑ for zero net torque; ideal mechanical advantage = Fₗ/Fₑ = rₑ/rₗ; pivot reaction = Fₗ + Fₑ.
A simple lever balances clockwise and counterclockwise moments about the fulcrum. A longer effort arm reduces the effort force in the ideal static model, while the pivot must supply the combined vertical reaction of the two downward forces.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Load force — N; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000
- Load arm from fulcrum — m; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Effort arm from fulcrum — m; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Load force | 500 |
| Load arm from fulcrum | 0.4 |
| Effort arm from fulcrum | 1.2 |
Effort force 166.67 N, ideal mechanical advantage 3, pivot reaction 666.67 N
Assumptions and limits
- The load and effort act perpendicular to the lever on opposite sides of a massless, rigid lever.
- The lever is static and frictionless, and the entered arms are distances from the same fulcrum.
- Lever mass, support deformation, friction, acceleration, tipping, and safe working load are not modeled.
