Formula and methodology
Formula: Frequency-polygon points are (class midpoint, frequency); total frequency = Σf; grouped mean = Σ(midpoint×frequency)/Σf.
The midpoint-frequency pairs are the numerical structure used to draw a frequency polygon. The weighted mean is shown as an approximation because class midpoints cannot recover variation inside each class.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Class midpoints
- Class frequencies
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Class midpoints | 1, 3, 5, 7 |
| Class frequencies | 2, 5, 7, 3 |
Total frequency is 17; grouped mean is about 4.2941; points are (1,2), (3,5), (5,7), (7,3).
Assumptions and limits
- Midpoints and frequencies have the same length, and frequencies are nonnegative whole-number counts.
- The class intervals are ordered and the entered midpoints represent the classes used by the source table.
- The grouped mean is an approximation based on midpoints; individual observations and within-class spread are not available.
