Formula and methodology
Formula: Delta Tf = i Kf m; solution freezing temperature = base freezing temperature - Delta Tf.
The colligative-property relation estimates how dissolved particles lower a solvent's freezing temperature. The result is an ideal dilute-solution calculation and does not replace activity, phase-equilibrium, pressure, or material-specific analysis.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Freezing-point constant Kf — deg C kg/mol; Use the constant for the selected solvent; it must be positive.; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 10000
- Molality — mol/kg; Enter a finite nonnegative molality.; minimum 0; maximum 1000000
- van't Hoff factor i — Use a positive effective particle factor.; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 100
- Pure-solvent freezing point — deg C; Enter the pure-solvent freezing temperature in degrees Celsius.; minimum -273.15; maximum 10000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Freezing-point constant Kf | 1.86 |
| Molality | 0.5 |
| van't Hoff factor i | 1 |
| Pure-solvent freezing point | 0 |
Freezing-point depression is 0.93 deg C; solution temperature is -0.93 deg C.
Assumptions and limits
- Kf is the solvent-specific freezing-point constant in deg C kg/mol, molality is in mol/kg, and i is a positive effective particle factor.
- The solution is dilute enough for the ideal colligative-property approximation and the entered base temperature is the pure-solvent value.
- Pressure dependence, activity coefficients, concentration limits, eutectics, and nonideal or phase-specific behavior are outside this calculator.
