Formula and methodology
Formula: Base studs = ceil(wall length/stud spacing) + 1; estimated studs = base studs + 2 × openings; gross stud length = estimated studs × wall height; plate length = 3 × wall length.
The count gives a transparent straight-wall framing allowance and adds two jamb studs per entered opening. It is a quantity estimate, not a structural design.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Wall length — m; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Wall height — m; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000
- Stud spacing — m; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 100
- Openings — minimum 0; maximum 1000
- Typical opening width — m; minimum 0; maximum 1000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Wall length | 6 |
| Wall height | 2.4 |
| Stud spacing | 0.4 |
| Openings | 1 |
| Typical opening width | 0.9 |
Estimated studs = 18, gross stud length = 43.2 m, and plate length = 18 m.
Assumptions and limits
- Studs are placed at a constant maximum spacing along one straight wall.
- Each opening adds two full-height-equivalent jamb positions; headers, sills, cripples, corners, and end conditions are not dimensioned.
- Three plate runs are assumed for material length only; species, grade, load path, bracing, fasteners, and local code rules are excluded.
