Formula and methodology
Formula: Position units = lots × units per lot; pip value in quote currency = position units × pip size; pip value in account currency = pip value in quote currency × quote-to-account rate.
A pip value is the monetary change produced by one pip for a particular position. This calculator keeps the lot convention, pip size, and currency conversion explicit instead of assuming that every pair uses the same contract or account currency.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Position size — lots; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Base units per lot — base units / lot; Use the contract size defined by your broker or instrument.; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000
- Pip size — quote price units / pip; Common examples are 0.0001 for many pairs and 0.01 for many JPY-quoted pairs.; minimum 1.0E-8; maximum 1
- Quote currency to account currency — account / quote; minimum 1.0E-10; maximum 1000000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Position size | 1 |
| Base units per lot | 100000 |
| Pip size | 0.0001 |
| Quote currency to account currency | 1 |
A 1-lot position contains 100,000 base units; one pip is worth 10 quote-currency units and 10 account-currency units, while 10 pips are worth 100 account-currency units.
Assumptions and limits
- The entered lot size is a decimal multiple of the entered units-per-lot convention.
- Pip size is supplied for the exact pair or instrument being studied.
- The quote-to-account rate is expressed as account-currency units for one quote-currency unit.
- The conversion rate is treated as constant for this scenario.
- One pip means one increment of the entered pip size, not a broker-specific fractional pip.
- Commission, spread, swaps, financing, taxes, and slippage are excluded.
- The result is a sensitivity value and not a prediction of price direction.
- Broker minimums, maximums, and contract specifications must be checked separately.
- A JPY or non-standard pair can require a different pip convention than the default.
