Formula and methodology
Formula: Focal length = sensor width/[2 tan(field of view/2)].
The thin-lens field-of-view relation connects the sensor half-width to the half-angle of the captured scene.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Sensor width — mm; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Horizontal field of view — degrees; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 179.999999
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Sensor width | 36 |
| Horizontal field of view | 53.1 |
Focal length ≈ 35 mm.
Assumptions and limits
- Sensor width is positive and field of view is between 0 and 180 degrees.
- The field of view is horizontal and the lens is modeled by rectilinear pinhole geometry.
- Crop modes, distortion, image circles, focus breathing, and manufacturer tolerances are not modeled.
