Formula and methodology
Formula: Usable energy = ½I(ωmax²−ωmin²), where ω = 2π·RPM/60.
The calculator reports the energy available between two speeds, not merely the energy at maximum speed, which makes the usable operating window explicit.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Moment of inertia — kg·m²; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1.0E+15
- Maximum speed — RPM; minimum 0; maximum 1000000000
- Minimum usable speed — RPM; minimum 0; maximum 1000000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Moment of inertia | 10 |
| Maximum speed | 6000 |
| Minimum usable speed | 3000 |
Usable mechanical energy is about 1,480 kJ (411.2 Wh).
Assumptions and limits
- Moment of inertia is for the complete rotating assembly and both speeds are shaft RPM.
- The stored-energy difference is mechanical energy before conversion losses.
- Material stress, maximum safe speed, bearing loss, motor-generator efficiency, heat, and containment are not modeled.
