Formula and methodology
Formula: Net area = length × width; order area = net area × (1 + waste rate/100); packages = ceiling(order area/package coverage).
Waste is an explicit planning allowance for cuts, defects, pattern matching, and future repairs; it is not a building-code requirement.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Room length — m; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Room width — m; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Waste allowance — %; minimum 0; maximum 1000
- Coverage per package — m²; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Room length | 5 |
| Room width | 4 |
| Waste allowance | 10 |
| Coverage per package | 2.2 |
Net area = 20 m²; order area = 22 m²; packages = 10.
Assumptions and limits
- The floor plan is a single rectangle.
- The waste rate and package coverage are user-entered estimates.
- Doorways, alcoves, irregular rooms, installation direction, and product packaging rules are not inferred.
