Formula and methodology
Formula: tileArea = tileL x tileW / 144 sq ft; exact = areaSqft / tileArea; buy = ceil(exact x (1 + waste/100)).
Tile area converts square inches to square feet (144 sq in per sq ft). The exact count divides floor area by tile area, and the buy quantity inflates it by the waste percentage and rounds up.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Floor area — sq ft; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000000
- Tile length — in; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Tile width — in; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Waste allowance — %; 10% is typical for straight lays; use more for diagonals.; minimum 0; maximum 100
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Floor area | 200 |
| Tile length | 12 |
| Tile width | 12 |
| Waste allowance | 10 |
Exact tiles 200.00; buy 220 tiles with 10% waste.
Assumptions and limits
- Rectangular tiles laid straight with no pattern matching or grout-width adjustment.
- Cuts, breakage, and spares come from the waste allowance; 200 sq ft of 12x12 in tile at 10% needs 220.
