Formula and methodology
Formula: Fly = hoist × fly-to-hoist ratio; flag area = hoist × fly; flag top height = bottom clearance + hoist.
This is a general rectangular flag layout planner. Enter consistent units and a ratio appropriate to the flag or banner being designed. The page calculates geometry and pole placement without silently applying one country's specification to every flag.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Hoist length — length units; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Fly-to-hoist ratio — ratio; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 100
- Pole height — length units; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Bottom clearance — length units; minimum 0; maximum 1000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Hoist length | 1 |
| Fly-to-hoist ratio | 1.9 |
| Pole height | 6 |
| Bottom clearance | 1.5 |
A 1-unit hoist at a 1.9 ratio has a 1.9-unit fly and 1.9 square units of face area; its top is 2.5 units above the base with 3.5 units of pole above it.
Assumptions and limits
- The flag face is treated as a rectangle with straight edges.
- Hoist, fly, pole height, and clearance use the same length unit.
- The entered ratio means fly length divided by hoist length.
- The flag is attached at its hoist edge and hangs within the stated pole layout.
- Pole height must exceed bottom clearance plus hoist length.
- The area is the flat face area and excludes seams, hems, folds, and hardware.
- No wind load, fabric strength, mounting stress, or structural safety factor is calculated.
- No national emblem, canton, stripe, star, or legal display specification is inferred.
- Local building, accessibility, road, event, and property rules may impose other clearances.
- The result is a layout estimate and should be reviewed by a qualified installer for a real structure.
