Formula and methodology
Formula: Median splits sorted data; Q1/Q3 are medians of the halves; IQR = Q3-Q1; fences = Q1-1.5*IQR, Q3+1.5*IQR.
Tukey hinges: with an even count the halves split exactly; with an odd count the overall median is excluded from both halves. Points outside the fences are flagged as suspected outliers.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Values — 1-1,000 numbers, each between -1e12 and 1e12.
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Values | 2, 4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 7, 9 |
Min 2; Q1 4; median 4.5; Q3 6; max 9; IQR 2; no outliers.
Assumptions and limits
- At least 4 observations for meaningful hinges.
- Tukey-hinge convention; other software may interpolate differently.
- At most 1,000 finite numbers.
