Formula and methodology
Formula: Scheduled payments = periodic payment × number of payments; total outlay = scheduled payments + stated cash fees; simple finance-charge estimate = total outlay − amount financed.
This calculator isolates the arithmetic behind a simple payment-schedule comparison. It treats the amount financed as the net credit received, multiplies one equal payment by the number of scheduled payments, adds the separately entered finance fees, and subtracts the amount financed. The result is a transparent estimate of the cost above principal under the supplied schedule. It does not recreate a jurisdiction-specific disclosure, APR, amortization table, late-fee rule, insurance charge, tax, or variable-rate contract.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Amount financed — currency units; minimum 0.01; maximum 1000000000000
- Periodic payment — currency units; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000
- Number of payments — payments; minimum 1; maximum 10000
- Additional finance fees — currency units; minimum 0; maximum 1000000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Amount financed | 10000 |
| Periodic payment | 325 |
| Number of payments | 36 |
| Additional finance fees | 150 |
The schedule totals 11,700 in payments; adding 150 in stated fees gives 11,850 total outlay and a 1,850 simple finance-charge estimate.
Assumptions and limits
- The amount financed is the net credit amount used for this scenario, not necessarily the face amount printed on a contract.
- Every scheduled payment has the same amount and is made on time.
- The number of payments is a whole-number count and the payment and fee inputs use the same currency unit.
- Additional finance fees are entered separately and are included once in total outlay.
- The schedule must repay at least the stated amount financed; a negative charge would indicate inconsistent inputs for this model.
- Actual legal finance-charge disclosures depend on the contract and applicable rules; review the lender’s documents before relying on them.
