Formula and methodology
Formula: Pickets = ceiling(fence length/(picket width+gap)×(1+waste/100)); face area = pickets×width×height.
The count treats each picket and its following gap as one repeating pitch and rounds up to whole boards.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Fence length — m; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Picket width — m; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000
- Gap between pickets — m; minimum 0; maximum 1000
- Picket height — m; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000
- Waste allowance — %; minimum 0; maximum 1000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Fence length | 20 |
| Picket width | 0.1 |
| Gap between pickets | 0.05 |
| Picket height | 1.8 |
| Waste allowance | 5 |
Pickets = 140; face area = 25.2 m².
Assumptions and limits
- All dimensions are metres and spacing repeats along a straight run.
- Waste is applied before rounding to a whole picket.
- Posts, rails, gates, slopes, end cuts, local codes, and structural design are not modeled.
